I’ve learned that sometimes the rooms you struggle with the most end up becoming the spaces you love the most. If you’re looking for budget-friendly bathroom updates, there are plenty of creative ways to transform your space.
This was never a dramatic weekend makeover or a full gut renovation. Instead, it evolved gradually as we figured out what would make the space feel brighter, calmer, and more functional for our everyday routines.
When we bought this house, I knew the bathroom needed some love. The dark brown paint made the room feel heavy and small, and the previous owners had actually hung a full-length body mirror horizontally above the vanity, something I had never seen before. It looked awkward, but it also made getting ready surprisingly difficult.
The room had potential, so we got more and more creative with it over time.
If you’re looking for bathroom updates on a budget, this is exactly the kind of slow-and-steady refresh that adds up to a big transformation.
Why We Removed the Extra Bathroom Door
During our bedroom renovation, we removed the additional interior door to our main bathroom and built a wall in its place. The bedroom door and bathroom door were only inches apart in the hallway, and in a small two-bedroom home with one bath, having two doors in each room didn’t make sense.
Closing it in gave us more usable wall space and improved the flow in both rooms. In the bathroom, it created the perfect spot for additional storage.
We didn’t hire professional help for this part, as my husband is very handy and removed the door and framed the new wall himself.
Once the second that door was gone, I knew it was the right decision. In the bathroom, we gained much-needed storage, and in the bedroom, we created a seating corner, which I have always wanted.
Honestly, I can’t imagine the layout any other way now.

Bathroom Before Images for Comparison
The before photos are dark for many reasons, but basically a good comparison to our updates.
Bathroom Updates on a Budget (What We Changed)
Repairing the Wall Where the Door Used to Be
The extra door between the bathroom and bedroom was removed, patched, finished, and blended seamlessly so it looked like it had always been there. It completely changed how functional the bathroom could be.
Paint for a Clean, Classic Base
For a calm, classic base, we painted the walls Calm by Benjamin Moore and used Simply White on the trim.
Funny enough, Calm was actually our second attempt at painting the bathroom. Because the room had been so dark to begin with, I thought I wanted to brighten everything up with Simply White on the walls, too.
The color itself actually wasn’t bad, but we ended up with a bad batch of paint, and the finish dried terribly. The walls looked bumpy and uneven afterward.
In the end, repainting the room in Calm gave us the softer, cozier look I had originally been trying to create anyway, so it definitely worked out for the best.
The Best Upgrade: Added Storage (IKEA HAVSTA)
The biggest difference came from adding storage.
We placed an IKEA HAVSTA unit where the old door used to be, and it completely changed how the bathroom functions. It provides a dedicated space for towels, toiletries, extra products, and styling items. It instantly makes the room feel less cluttered.
In a bathroom, having proper closed storage really makes a visual and practical difference.
Vanity & Tub Surround Surround (Paint + Hardware)
Instead of replacing the vanity or bathtub, we decided to refresh what we already had.
A fresh coat of paint and updated hardware gave it a much cleaner, more updated look without the cost of a brand-new vanity.
Organized Everything (Drawer Liners + Zones)
One of the least exciting updates turned out to be one of the most helpful.
I decided to line all the drawers and cabinets and reorganize our vanity and new storage unit. It sounds simple, but having systems for storing toiletries, hair products, towels, and everyday essentials makes the entire room easier to maintain.
Fixture Updates That Modernized the Space
We also updated several of the fixtures throughout the bathroom, including the faucets and lighting.
One of the biggest visual changes was swapping in double mirrors, replacing the full-length mirror that had been hung sideways. It’s amazing how much mirrors can change the feel of a room without requiring a major renovation.
Replaced the Toilet
We also replaced the toilet, which was more of a practical upgrade, but definitely worth doing when a toilet is outdated.
Cozy Finishing Touches
The finishing details are what really made the space feel warm and lived-in.
That pretty little lamp on the vanity might seem like a small thing, but it completely changed the feel of the space for me. In the mornings and evenings, I love having that soft glow instead of the bright overhead lights (although my husband would happily use stadium lighting at all hours of the day, lol).
One of the simplest upgrades that also made the bathroom feel more elevated was switching everyday products to soap and lotion dispensers. We even did this in the shower. Mine are no longer available, but these are similar and beautiful.
Getting rid of bright, branded bottles instantly made the space feel calmer and more cohesive. It’s such a small change, but placing dispensers on a pretty tray or dish makes everyday items feel intentional and adds a more custom feel without spending very much.
I also added artwork, layered textiles, a stool, stems in a vase, and little cozy touches throughout the room to make it feel more connected to the rest of our home.
And one of the final additions was the crown molding, which, honestly, is one of my favorite details in the room. I’ll always hang onto a little bit of traditional design, and crown molding instantly gives a space that cozy, classic feeling I’m drawn to. We’ve now added it in both our bedroom and bathroom, and I’m already hoping my office is next.
The 3 Changes That Made the Biggest Difference
If I had to pick the updates that made the biggest impact, it would definitely be:
- Adding the IKEA HAVSTA storage unit
- Switching to double mirrors
- Reorganizing the drawers and cabinets
Those three changes made the bathroom feel dramatically more functional and pulled together without requiring a full remodel.
More than anything, though, my favorite part is how functional the room feels now. Everything has a place, the room feels brighter, and our daily routines flow so much better because what we need is easy to access and organized.
The Look I Was Going For
My goal for this bathroom was always to create a classic, comfortable space.
I wanted a soft, calming paint color, additional storage that reduced clutter, and simple updates that felt timeless.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that creating a home can really be a shared process (if you share your home with someone else). My husband is very practical and incredibly supportive of my ideas and designs, but I also try to think about how the space functions for him, too.
It’s about balancing beauty with practicality, cozy details with everyday function, and I think that balance is what made this bathroom turn out the way it did.
What I Still Want to Change
Like most spaces in our home, this bathroom still feels evolving.
I’d still love to replace the tile backsplash at some point, swap out the stool with something more vintage, and maybe bring in a darker rug for a little more contrast and warmth.
I’ll probably keep puttering away at it over time, which honestly feels very realistic for most homes.
My Dream Bathroom (Someday!)
If I’m being honest, my dream bathroom would eventually be a full gut renovation.
I’d love to remove the tub, add a large walk-in shower, and do a custom vanity with built-in storage to maximize every inch of the space.
But for now, I’m really happy with how much better this bathroom feels after these budget-friendly updates, even if I still have a few things I want to tweak.
I’ve lived in old homes, newer homes, apartments, and even a condo over the years (we moved around quite a bit), but this bathroom feels different because we’ve updated it over time.
Nothing happened overnight here, and I think that’s part of why I love it so much now. It feels collected over time, just like the rest of our home.
Is it my dream bathroom? Honestly, no. But it feels like us now, and that matters more to me than having a perfectly renovated space.
Final Thoughts
This bathroom update shows you that it is possible to transform your bathroom on a budget over time.
If a friend asked me where to start with a bathroom refresh, I’d honestly say, start with the things that improve your everyday routines first. Start with things like storage, organization, lighting, and removing visual clutter. Those changes completely transformed how this bathroom feels for us without requiring a major renovation.

Love what you did. I recently redid 2 bathrooms but not completely done yet. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the IKEA piece b/c the reviews are pretty mixed w/ some saying there are paint issues including blue marks, etc. I wish I had stocked my home w/ IKEA years ago when quality was 100% there but I guess that’s true of so many things these days.
Regardless, you did a really lovely job! You’re hired! 🙂
Thank you so much, Adrienne.
For the IKEA unit, we’ve been very happy with ours. I had read some of the mixed reviews before purchasing, but ours arrived in great condition and has worked well in our bathroom. I agree that quality can vary more than it used to. So far, we’ve had luck with this piece and a few others from IKEA.
Thank you again for the kind words and the job offer! 😄
I love the cordless lamp! I’m definitely going to do that in my bathroom now.
Thank you! 😊 It’s one of my favorite things. I hope you love it in your bathroom too!
