The right nightstand essentials can make the end of your day feel simpler. When the things you reach for most are close at hand, it becomes easier to read, unwind, care for yourself, and settle in for the night.

What belongs beside your bed depends on how you live. You may want a good book within reach, a few practical self-care items, water nearby, or even something that helps you feel prepared if the power goes out.

This list is not meant to become another set of rules to follow. It is a collection of useful ideas to help you choose the nightstand essentials that support your own evening routine.

Choose Nightstand Essentials That Fit Your Routine

Before adding anything to your nightstand, think about what you actually do before bed and when you wake up.

Do you read, journal, complete a skincare routine, take medication, or like having water nearby? Maybe you prefer a technology-free bedroom, or perhaps a device that supports the way you rest.

Your nightstand should reflect those routines rather than follow someone else’s checklist. The most useful essentials are the ones you reach for often and are grateful to have nearby.

Nightstand Essentials I Would Recommend to a Friend

These are the nightstand essentials I love and tend to fall back on for my evening routine. Some have been a part of my life for years now, and it is about making products accessible that help me wind down for bed.

1. Kindle

Reading is part of my evening routine, and I plan to finish at least one book each month. Keeping my Kindle in the nightstand makes it easy to read for a while before turning out the light without adding a stack of books beside the bed.

A Kindle may be a good fit if you enjoy reading at night but prefer to keep your nightstand surface simple.

2. Kindle Case

Because I travel regularly for work, my Kindle case is one of my favorite accessories. It protects the screen when I tuck it into my work bag or carry-on, then keeps the Kindle protected when it returns to my nightstand drawer at home.

Look for a case that feels comfortable to hold, closes securely, and is slim enough to travel (I always avoid bulkiness when I can).

3. Reading Glasses

My reading glasses are one of the first things I reach for each evening, so they have a permanent place beside the bed.

Keeping a dedicated pair in the nightstand means I am not searching the house for them when I am ready to read. I also keep them in a case so they stay protected inside the drawer.

4. Eyeglass Cleaner and Cloth

Because I use my reading glasses every evening, I keep eyeglass cleaner and a soft cloth in my drawer too.

It’s a small, practical item. Clean glasses make reading more comfortable, and keeping everything together means I never have to leave the room to look for what I need.

5. Hand Cream

Applying hand cream is part of my evening routine. I love Osea Undaria Algae Body Butter, which especially helps my skin when it feels drier. It has a light citrus scent, and it is one of my essentials year-round.

A nightstand is a convenient place for a cream you use regularly, but I would avoid filling the drawer with several partly used products. Narrow it down and choose one you enjoy and will actually reach for.

6. Foot Cream

I also keep foot cream nearby as part of my bedtime self-care routine.

This may not be one of everyone’s nightstand essentials, and that is exactly the point. The items beside your bed should support the habits that matter to you rather than match a universal list.

7. Perfume

I have worn perfume to bed since I was a teenager. It is a small part of my evening routine that still feels special after all these years.

Lately, I have been keeping a few Salt & Stone fragrance testers in my nightstand while I decide which scent I love most. A discovery set is such a nice way to live with a fragrance for a while before choosing a full bottle, especially when scent can feel different once it becomes part of your everyday routine.

Salt & Stone has become a recent favorite, and I was happy to find their fragrances on Amazon so I could include them in this collection.

8. Essential Oils

Sometimes I use the Sweet Dreams essential oil trio set from Saje Wellness instead of perfume.

I do not use it every night, but I like having the option when I want a different scent in my evening routine. The three oils in the trio have different uses, like sleep support, relaxation, and a calming effect.

9. Xylitol Mints

Xylitol mints are another small item I like to have on hand at night.

They take up very little room and fit easily into a drawer organizer. I keep them in a container so they stay fresh and do not become loose inside the drawer. I switch between brands and have tried Pure and Zellies. If I had to pick one, it would be Zellies, as they are softer and melt in your mouth quickly. They have oral health benefits, which you can read more about here if you are interested.

10. Hair Ties

A few hair ties are useful to have nearby when I want to pull my hair back before bed.

I do not keep a large collection in the nightstand. Just a couple is enough. Small items like these are easiest to maintain when they have a defined place rather than being scattered throughout the drawer.

11. Tissues

Tissues are among the simplest nightstand essentials, but also among the most practical.

A small box or compact package of Kleenex works well if drawer space is limited. Keeping them nearby means I do not have to search for them in the middle of the night.

12. Flashlight

My husband suggested keeping a small flashlight in our nightstands, and it has become one of those practical items I would not want to be without.

When the power suddenly goes out, I know exactly where to find it. It is a simple safety measure that takes up very little space and gives me peace of mind.

13. Red Light Therapy Mask

My red light therapy mask is one of my favorite purchases and is part of my evening routine, although it does not fit in the top drawer with the smaller essentials.

I store it in the second drawer with my extra sheet set. Frequently used items do not always need to be stored in the top drawer. The best place is the one that suits the item’s size and how you use it.

14. Water Bottle

I like having water within reach during the night.

A reusable bottle works well because it is less likely to spill than an open glass and can be refilled each evening. A small carafe and glass could also be a lovely option if that suits your bedside setup better.

15. Alarm & Brown Noise

This one does not live inside my nightstand, but it has become such an important part of my evening routine that I could not leave it off the list.

I did not even know brown noise was a thing until I tried it. I am a light sleeper, and while the sound of rain or waves crashing may be more beautiful, the steady, fan-like sound of brown noise has worked much better for me. I use it throughout the night and have found that it helps me stay asleep when small sounds might otherwise wake me.

Right now, I use the Amazon Echo Show for both brown noise and my morning alarm, so I have no reason to replace what already works. That has not stopped me from finding an alarm clock and sound machine I like on Amazon and adding it to my someday basket. I may not need it today, but the Hatch has additional features I think I may like if that changes.

How I Use My Phone Without Keeping It Beside the Bed

One item you will not find charging on my nightstand is my phone. Sleep is my number one priority, so I leave it at a charging station outside our bedroom.

I do bring it into the room for one intentional part of my evening routine. While using my red light therapy mask, I rest with my legs up the wall to reduce inflammation and listen to an audio from the Activations app. I often choose one created specifically for this practice. However, the app also includes supportive audios for morning and evening routines, walking, planning, food, celebrations, and many other parts of everyday life.

This time feels good for my legs and gives my mind a chance to settle before bed. Once the activation is finished, my phone returns to the charging station.

I keep my Kindle beside the bed because reading helps me wind down, but I do not want messages, notifications, or scrolling to become part of my bedtime routine.

I use and enjoy the Activations app and love how anyone can incorporate positivity and peace into their day. If you decide to join through my referral link, you will receive 25% off.

Your nightstand does not need every item on this list. In fact, I would never want that for you.

The best nightstand essentials are the ones that support your own evenings and mornings. Start with the routines that matter most, choose only the items you use, and let everything else find another home.
